DIY: How to Remove a Recessed Ceiling Light

When mounting spots in a stretch ceiling, the device is attached not to the film itself but to a special design called a mortgage. This part is behind the canvas and acts as a base to hold everything up. It is where the light fixture needs to be taken off. Two spring clips hold the light fixture itself to the mortgage platform.

There are only a few easy steps to removing light

1. Please turn off the automatic switch for the group of devices that goes with it.

Safety should always come first

There are two main ways to get rid of something. It is a unique name because there is no official name for it.

How to take off a tension-type mounting claw

Most downlights with bulbs can be changed using this method.

1. Turn off the power and take the light bulb out of the socket

If you need to stop the electricity, turn off the power switch or the breaker. To loosen the light bulb, turn it counterclockwise.

2. Take off the mirror

When you take the light bulb out, you can see the screw holding the reflector. Loosen the screw and take it out. If there is no screw, a spring stops the reflector from moving. The reflector will come off if you hold it from the inside and pull it down.

3. Take the mounting parts off (claws)

When the reflector is gone, you can see the “brackets” holding the downlights to the ceiling. These “metal fittings” come in groups of two or three. Fittings made of metal are put in the slide groove. A nail is often used to catch it in the grooved frame. There are also clip-on and screw-on types of this bracket. You can loosen the device by putting your hand inside it. When it is loose, lift the metal fittings, which will come off.

4. To lower the equipment, loosen the metal fittings that hold it up and lift them.

If you remove all the metal parts or move them inside the fixture, the downlight will come off the ceiling.
Now, the downlight hangs from the wire.

How to get rid of the leaf spring

Most of the newer downlights are like this one, with a spring.

• Use this method for LED downlights that can’t be changed or that can’t be taken off the reflector, as described in step 2.
• Hold the downlight’s frame firmly with the fingers of both hands and slowly pull it down. After pulling it down a few millimetres, hook your fingernail on it and use a little force to pull it down even more.
• If you pull the downlight about 5 cm, you can see a metal leaf spring about 1 cm wide. This is the holding spring.
• Hold the left and right springs with your fingers on both hands as you lower the device.
• The downlight moves down and turns off in the end.
• Now, the downlight hangs from the wire.
